Norman Arthur Elberfeld was born on April 13, 1875 in Pomeroy, Meigs County, Ohio, to Philip Elberfeld and Katherine Eiselstein. He was one of 5 sons and 5 daughters. The family moved to Cincinnati. The Kid played local and minor league ball until 1897 when he broke into the major league in Philadelphia. He played with several teams, including Detroit and New York of the American League, and managed New York in 1908. He earned the nickname "The Tobasco Kid" for his style of play a fiery temper. He ended his major league career playing for Brooklyn in 1914.
He moved to Signal Mountain, TN, managed many minor league teams in the south, and became well know for spotting and supporting young talent, including Casey Stengel. He also taught at many baseball schools and camps in the south. He married Grace Catlow and had 5 daughters and one son. All were excellent athletes, and the 5 girls formed a travelling basketball team.
