ELBERFELD DAUBS UMPIRE WITH MUD AND IS LAID OFF
Kid Elberfeld has had so many fights in the ball field that he cannot remember just which was the most serious, but he well recalls the funniest experience, for which he was canned: at least it was funny for the kid,
It was while the kid was in the American association, with the Milwaukee team. The umpire was a gentleman named Brenna, and he was giving the kid’s team all the worst of the decisions on a close game. In the ninth inning, with two out and Elberfeld’s team one run ahead, Brennan called a runner safe at second after the kid had slid through the mud and tagged him.
Elberfeld sat up with his two hands in the mud, and when Brennan yelled, “safe” the kid grabbed a handful of mud and threw it right into Brennan’s mouth. He did not wait to be put out of the game, but went right to the club house, where he watched the game for ten days.

THREW MUD AT THE UMP
Kid Elberfeld’s Way of Getting Back at Brennan
Kid Elberfeld of the Highlanders has had more personal encounters with umpires than any player in the big leagues. He pushed an umpire down at the Hartford park one day when the city was in the Atlantic League and came near to being mobbed by the enraged fans. He cannot remember all his battles, but really one he considers the funniest of his experiences - that is, funny for Elberfeld.
