March 3, 1913 - The Ogdensburg Journal, NY - Rube Waddell and Elberfeld Story
WADDELL SHOWED UP ELBERFELD
The reported illness of Rube Waddell recalls the following story to the mind of one of Detroit's fans, says the Detroit Journal:
"Years ago, when Kid Elberfeld was playing with Detroit Waddell was pitching for the Philadelphia Athletics. The Rube was in his prime then, and one day at old Bennett park, with Eddie Siever pitching for the Tigers, there was a tough game on with the Mackmen.
"It was along in the sixth or seventh inning with the score tied that Waddell Avalked up to Elberfeld at the plate and started kidding the infielder. "Elberfleld returned the talk faster than it came to him and Rube apparently got peeved.
"He looked at Elberfeld a few seconds, and then taking off his cap threw it down in front of .the batter. '"Kid, see that hat?' yelled Waddell, pointing his finger at the headgear. " 'Yep!' insolently answered Elberfeld. " 'Well, you won't hit the ball that far, get me, that far!' screamed Rube. "Elberfeld grinned, and took a tighter hold on his club. "Waddell walked back to the pitcher's box, wound up and shot a strike across. Elberfeld took a healthy waving at the second one and missed. He repeated on the third, missing the ball by two feet, it seemed. "As the Kid turned from the plate Waddell cried, "What'd I tell yuh!" Incidentally, Elberfeld struck out. four times in that game."
