Kid Elberfeld
Kid Elberfeld (left) was a tough competitor in Major League Baseball in the early 1900s. Called "the Tabasco Kid" because of his fiery disposition, he was known to yell at umpires and challenge other players. Opponents frequently spiked him; he was one of the most hit-by-pitch batters of all time. When the shortstop retired, he coached the Lookouts for two years and raised a family on Signal Mountain where his five girls were known as the "Elberfeld Girls basketball team." A road on the mountain still bears his name. (Courtesy Chattanooga History Center.)
