Mrs. McCall Barely Wins
BY AL SHARP.
There was plenty of excitement in the feminine ranks also. Miss Nan Elberfeld almost put out Mrs. Anna Robbins McCall before she started proving her right to the top-seeded post, but Mrs. McCall came back with vigor to trounce her tiring foe after three gruelling—we mean very tough sets, 5-7, 10-8, 6-2.
It was a narrow squeak in sense every of the word for Miss Elberfeld had taken the first set and was leading by five games to two when Mrs. McCall started a blasting comeback. The winner started smashing and runnng Miss Elberfeld all over the then and found less opposition in the final set.
Too much credit cannot be handed Elberfeld for her gallant stand. She is not one of the four favorites. Though yesterday's second-round tilts proved tough indeed, they probably will be classed as tea party affairs after the firing this afternoon, thee exception being the great display that Miss Elberfeld put on.
