July 25, 1922, Daily Arkansas Gazette (Little Rock, Arkansas) - Elberfeld Rumors
Rumor Shifts the Kid to Management of the Pels
New Orleans Hears That Dobbs Will Quit and Take the Atlanta Job and That Elberfeld Will Leave Little Rock for New Orleans.
If New Orleans knows Its dope, Norman A. Elberfeld will not manage the Little Rock Travelers next year but will manage the New Orleans Pelicans. That is the rather startling tip received last night by the Gazette from its New Orleans correspondent. He telegraphs that he has his information from a very reliable source, but said that when he asked the Kid the rumor was not confirmed and neither was It denied. He also said that in the shuffle of managers Johnny Dobbs would go to Atlanta.
Has Threatened to Leave
As far as is knows here officially Kid Elberfeld has not completed any plans for next year but it would not cause any great surprise if he did not remain here. He already has issued his annual statement that this will be his last year, but as always in the past It was not taken very seriously, although the Kid did seem a bit mora emphatic the last time he declared he was going elsewhere next season. However, he gave the Impression that he was going to get entirely out of the Southern Association. The Kid now is serving his fifth year as Traveler manager and it is well known that he can remain here Indefinitely so far as President R. G. Allen is concerned. The Kid and Mr. Allen have worked together in harmony at all times and often have expressed admiration of each other. There has been no falling out between them to cause the Kid to look elsewhere for a job next year. His troubles have been with umpires and the league president. At New Orleans he would encounter the same arbiters and the same league executive. However it is well known that the Kid Is ready for a change and there may be some real foundation for the New Orleans rumor.
Off Year for Managers
This seems to be a bad year forSouthern Association managers and it is likely that there will be many changes. Carleton Molesworth of Birmingham tossed in the sponge several weeks ago and returned to his Mary land farm. It is said that he is open for engagement for next season. Bill Rariden resigned the Atlanta management when the pressure became too strong and now comes the rumor that Johnny Dobbs will quit the Pelicans and that Kid Elberfeld will leave the Travelers for the job in New Orleans. Spencer Abbott, of course, is sitting pretty at Memphis and Bert Neihoff is regarded as having made good at Mobile. Larry Doyle hasn't done much good at Nashville, but he is popular there and is likely to remain on the job. Eddie McDonald has done no better nor any worse at Chattanooga than expected.
