January 10, 1907 - The Post Standard (Syracuse, New York) - Elberfeld's Ideas on Player Numbers
INGENIOUS KID.
Elberfeld has Some Ideas About Number Proposition.
NEW YORK Jan. 9 - Kid Elberfeld, the shortstop of the Highlanders, was in town from Suffern where he now lives, for a few days before the holidays. He did not attempt to deny the story that he was holding up Griff for an increase by threatening to manage the Suffern team next season.
The numbering of the players, suggested by Chub Murphy of the Chicago Nationals, seemed to worry the Kid, but Abe Nahon, the secretary of tte New York Americans dispelled all his by telling him that the American League would not be influenced by the action of the National League in connection with the 'tagging" of the men.
"I know if there is any giving out of numbers," said the Kid, "mine will be 13. I am not alone with this bunch, either. Joe Kelley told me during the meeting of the National Leave that if they didn't give him 23 be was going to ask for its as he feels it rightfully belongs to him.
"I would like to offer a suggestion about thls number scheme. Why not number the men according to their standing in the batting averages of last season? At that would escape the 13, as I finished tenth. This would serve a double purpose, in that it would indicate who the player is, and at the same time tell how he stood in the batting list at the end of the previous season."
Really, he's an Ingenious Kid. is that same Norman Elberfeld.
