EARLE THE DISCOVERER OF PROF. SAM LEEVER (ANE ELBERFELD)
Cincinnati. December 2.—While Billy Earle does not claim to be a Christopher Columbus of Balldom he thinks a credit mark is due him for starting Sam Leever along the road to baseball fame. "I ran up from Clarksville. Tenn." said the Globe Trotter, "to catch a game for New Richmond, in a little Clermont county town. We played on a diamond laid out in a cornfield, and I caught Leever for the first time. He was then a country schoolteacher. He looked so good to me I coaxed him to go to Clarksville with me. and I paid his fare. I took Norman Elberfeld at the same time. and Elberfeld went with me to Texas next season, but Leever balked on that.'
