JOHNSON WILL GET A WATCH
McAleer's All-Stars Each Rewarded With a Fine Souvenir.
According to a dispatch from Philadelphia, Walter Johnson, the local boy who pitches for the Washington team of the American league, will receive a handsome gold watch with a suitable inscription engraved on the back as a permanent souvenir of having been a member of Jimmy McAleer's team of All-Stars at the close of the regular American league season. It was the All-Stars that defeated the champion Athletics prior to their winning the world's championship from the Chicago Cubs and put them in shape to trim Chance's men. The Philadelphia dispatch says:
The members of McAleer's All-Stars, who helped to put the Athletics on edge for the world's series, have been rewarded by the officials of the local club. Although the All-Stars were rewarded by being paid one-half of the receipts of the five games here and at Washington, the officials of the Athletics decided that they should have something in the way of a permanent souvenir of the occasion, and it was decided to send every one of them a gold watch with a suitable inscription engraved on the back. The work was finished yesterday, and today they were sent to Washington. Those who will receive the gifts, in addition to Manager McAleer, are: Pitchers Walsh, White and Johnson. Catchers Street and Sullivan. Infielders Stahl, Elberfeld, Cunningham, Schaefer, McBride and Lord. Outfielders Milan, Speaker and Cobb.
NOTE: Cobb, Speaker, Walsh, Johnson were eventually elected to the Baseball Hall of Fame, so Elberfeld was in good company.
