August 31, 1905 - Detroit Free Press (Detroit, Michigan) - Ty Cobb's First Game - Elberfeld
Tigers Got Running Start on New York, and Never Were Headed, Winning 5 to 3
Cobb Made Satisfactory Debut
Cobb Go Away Well
...First time the Georgian whaled the ball over Hahn's head for a two baser, scoring his man. Second time he drew a pass and died in an attempted double steal. On the fielding end he grabbed off both flies that came his way. He had no chance to show us whether his speed is what the papers said about it, excepting on the occasion of his attempted steal, which was a failure.
... Then Cobb walked, but he was nipped going to second, trying to draw a throw that would get Crawford home.
NOTE: Kid Elberfeld was playing shortstop. This was the game and the play that became legendary over time
