July 6, 1896 - The Public Ledger - Maysville, KY
There's no use in saying Lever pitched good ball;—all you have to do is to ask the "Indians," and they'll all second that motion with a warwhoop.
There were others on the Colonels' list that deserve the collar of merit as well as Sammy though, especially Elberfeld and Cornelius. These two individuals not only fielded their positions well, but they fairly "killed" the ball every time they shouldered the wagon-tongue, Elberfeld scoring four of the eleven runs and Cornelius two and left on base once.
Earle was all right in his position, as was all the other players. There was one noticeable feature of yesterday's game as compared with the games that have been played in the fair Southern city—Crawley, Jobe and Flour-noy never rolled a single ball over the fence for a home run.
However, Mauagermoffett and his tribe of braves are a set of fine-looking, well- behaved fellows, aid when Maysville people meet such citizens they know how to treat them.
