Remembering Former Yankees INF Kid "The Tabasco Kid" Eberfeld
April 13, 1875- Former Yankees INF and Manager (1908) Kid “The Tabasco Kid” Elberfeld (1903-1909) was born. (1875-1944)
On June 10,1903, INF Kid Elberfeld was traded by the Detroit Tigers to the New York Highlanders for infielders Ernie Courtney and Herman Long. Kid appeared in 667 games for the New York Yankees, hitting .268. He managed the 1908 New York Highlanders for 98 games. He was proficient at the art of getting hit by the pitch, ranking # 15 on the all-time list (through 2010). He also he played and managed many years in the minor leagues. Although he stood only 5 ' 7 " tall, he was famous for his temper, which earned him the nickname of “The Tabasco Kid”. Books about Casey Stengel say that when Elberfeld was a veteran and Stengel was a young player, the two became close friends. Elberfeld gave Stengel useful information on how to be a successful ballplayer. On December 14,1909, he was purchased by the Washington Senators from the New York Highlanders for $5,000.
