SCHAEFER MAKES A PROPHECY
Tells Detroit Admirers That Griffith Will Finish Team in Either Fifth or Fourth Place - Atlanta Reported to Be After Elberfeld, but Club Has Yet to Receive Bid From City Named.
BY JOE S. JACKSON.
Atlanta Said to Covet Elberfeld.
Report has it that the Atlanta club, of the Southern League, is now after the services of Norman Elberfeld, though if it is the Washington management has not been informed. President F. E. Callaway, of Atlanta, has been in Washington this week, and his townsmen suppose one object of his trip to be a talk with the local folk about the player named. Manager Griffith said last night that he had not seen or heard of Callaway nor received any proposition from Atlanta.
Charlie Hemphill, formerly of the Highlanders, from which team Elberfeld came here. is managing the Georgia outfit. It is expected that Chattanooga will close for Elberfeld this week. Griffith has not released him as yet. though the other three departing players - Conroy, Lelivelt, and Gray - have been formally transferred to their new club, Rochester, of the International League.
