August 17, 1906 - The Washington Post, DC - Elberfeld Reinstated
AUGUST 17, 1906.
WASHINGTON POST:
Did Ban Johnson reinstate "Kid" Elberfeld on the latter's threat to jump the American League? Among players it is reported that Elberfeld has given Griffith a certain time to trade him or he threatens to quit baseball. Norrnan's reason Is his conviction that American League umpires are after him. Fresh on the heels of this statement comes the rumor that McGraw' has asked waivers on Sammy Strang, and that Griffith has asked waivers on Elberfeld, the object being to exchange the pair. It is said Elberfeld refuses to play in the American League any longer. The story is causing no end of talk in Gotham. One thing is certain: Johnson had a mighty weighty reason for reinstating Elberfeld so soon after his "indefinite" suspension following his vicious attack on O'Loughlin in St. Louis.
Those who know Elberfeld well say he will rot hesitate to quit the game. He has played in but few games this year, owing to injuries and suspensions. He is peevish and imagines he is being persecuted. In this mood, Elberfed is liable to jump the Yankees any moment. But the proposition of McGraw getting the scrappy player is what lends doubt to the story. Elberfeld is a man after "Muggsy's own heart. He would be a tower of strength to the Giants at second, on account of his brilliant fielding and hard hitting. But it isn't just apparent how Frank Farrell would stand for a trade which is bound to add to the prestige of his rivals in New York. If the trade involved St. Louis or some other town outside the rnetropolis, the news would receive. much credence. But it's hard to believe that Griffith is strengthening his mortal enemy at the expense of his team, although he did release Dougherty to Comiskey, and that young man has been the biggest help of them all in putting Chicago at the top of the American League. Money may accomplish the stunt, however. These maneuvers of big-league clubs, are getting to be exceedingly interesting.
