League Veterans May Be on Market
Chance that Criger. Elberfeld and Wallace May Be Shifted
That a number of American League veterans will shift teams before the opening of the 1910 season is a certainty, says the Cleveland Plaindealer.
That Kid Elberfeld is through as a member of the New York team is generally understood in that city. He has been of little use to the team for the last two years, being out of the game on on account of injuries the greater part of the time. His reign as manager was a failure, brought down lots of criticism on his head and no doubt affected his work as a player.
Wants to Play in Washington.
Elberfeld, with his family, resides in Washington during the winter. It is understood that he Intends to locate there permanently, consequently he would prefer a berth In Washington to any other city in the American League. He has several times expressed such a preference, and even last year Canttllon tried to put a deal through for his services, but the demands of the New York club were too great.
Last year was none too successful for the "Tabasco Kid," and the New York club Is beginning to think that a change would do the clever but erratic infielder some good, and would also prove beneficial to the Highlanders. While a truce was fixed up between Chase and ElberfeId when the former returned to the club, bad feeling still exists between the pair, so ball players say.
It is not unlikely that the fox of all ball traders. Jimmy McAieer, will put through a deal that will take Elberfeld to Washington. Jimmy has always liked Elberfeld as a player, and. being game to the core, is probably willing to take a chance. McAieer took Waddell after he had been passed up. likewise Ferris, had no trouble handling either and had good results from both. Perhaps he is just the kind of a tamer Elberfeld needs to show his best.
