1990 Target Dodgers Set - All 73 sheets identified
Today was the day that I was determined to confirm once and for all if I had a full set of 1990 Target Dodger cards! For those of you who are not familiar this set, they came in packages of perforated sheets, apparently given out across several Dodger games in LA during the 1990 season. The cards are much smaller than the standard trading card sized and feature nearly all (maybe all, not sure) players who appeared with the franchise since it's inception in 1890. This was the 100 year anniversary of the club.
I had wanted a set for a long time, but those selling full sets online wanted $100+ for them and I just didn't want to pay that much for one. I started buying small lots of the packages and often could get 3-4 packages for quit cheap. Some were already opened, others were still sealed. I kept buying these smaller lots and had hoped to complete the set, but I never had all of the different packages already opened and I didn't want to open any I didn't have duplicates of, so I just did nothing.
As I was cleaning up around the card room, I decided to finally figure this little mystery out. I dug up ALL of the packages I had and sorted them by the first player shown in the top right corner. In the end, I had 6 different packages with many duplicates. Oddly enough, when I finally had them sorted out, it turns out I had EXACTLY 4 of each package, opened and/or sealed, minus one single sheet!
A few years back, I had started to separate some sheets that I knew were duplicates, but that was tedious work and I was just creating piles of oddly sized cards to deal with, so I stopped. It stands to reason that I separated 1or 2 full packages and a single sheet of another package when I stopped. This kind of sucks now, since I'd have 4 complete, unseparated sets, but hey, what can you do? What this did allow me to do was open any unsealed packages and finally catalog this set.
The "experts" seem to disagree on the set breakdown, so here it is from a completely opened set. 1095 cards. 73 sheets with 15 cards per sheet, originating from 6 different packages. Not all packages had the same number of sheets, obviously, and the card numbers are not continuous. There are unissued numbers and a few cases where the same number was repeated. Sure makes it a pain to figure out if you have a full set, especially if some packages are no longer sealed.
So, as a service to you, I will share with you the secret formula to completing a full set. The packages are listed below in no particular order by the way, since the cards are randomly presented within the sheets anyway:
Package 1: 17 sheets with "Sweet" Lou Johnson in the top right corner. If you flip the package over, Oyster Burns is the top right corner on back. 255 cards.
