Kid Elberfeld's Way of Getting Back Brennan
Kid Elberfeld of the Highlanders has bad more personal encounters with umpires than any player in the big leagues. He pushed an umpire down at the Hartford park one day; when that city was in the Atlantic league and came, near being mobbed by the enraged fans. He cannot remember all his battles, but recalls one he considers the funniest of his experiences - that Is, funny for Elberfeld.
It happened while the "Kid" was In the American Association with the Milwaukee team. The umpire was a gentleman named Brennan. and he was. In Elberfeld's opinion, givng the "Kid's" team all tbe worst of the decisions on .a close game. In the ninth inning with two out and Elberfeld's team one run ahead. Brennan called a runner safe at second after the Kid had slid through the mud and tagged him. Elberfeld sat up with his two hands in the mud. and when Brennan yelled "safe" the Kid grabbed a handful of mud and threw it right Into Brennan's mouth. Ha did not wait to be put out of the game, but went right to the clubhouse, where be watched the games for ten days.
