Makes Debut Here Today As Pilot of the Bears - Chicks and Bears Open Five Game Series Today - Otto Merz Will Draw Pitching Assignment for the Tribe — Hugh Magevney former Notre Dame Star and Local Boy Here With Mobile Club
NORMAN "KID’’ ELBERFELD, for several years manager of the Little Rock Travelers, will make his season's debut here today as manager of the Mobile Bears but will bring with him but few unfamiliar faces among the Bears. The Bears open a five-game series at Russwood Park ending next Monday. The Bears are tied with the Barons for fifth place and less than three games out of first place. Two of the Bear players who will be watched with interest by local fans are Hugh ’’Red” Magevney and Gene Caldera left handed pitchers. Magevney is a Memphis boy who starred three years as pitcher for the Notre Dame team .The Giants signed him last fall and turned him over to the Barons The Giants later released him and he recently signed with the Bears. Caldera was with the Chicks this season until recently sold to the Bears. Cahplin and Devormer, catchers, were with the Bears last year. Cueto and Kelly, infielders, are left ever from last season. Riley at first Wilkie at third and Geygan at short are new men. Mulvey is the only outfielder of last season. Jones and Emery are new Bears .Acosta, Ellis and Wiltse pitchers were with the team last season. Welzer is a new pitcher. Otto Merz will draw the pitching assignment for the Chicks this afternoon.
