The state of birth is Ohio, which agrees with all the census records and family records, and casts more doubt on the reports that he was born in Mason, WV, a city just across the river from Pomeroy, OH. However, I'm still looking for more confirmation of his birth site. His mother is listed as Katherine Elley, although her last name was Eiselstein.
