April 29, 1917 - Daily Arkansas Gazette (Little Rock, Arkansas) - Elberfeld the Silent
On the Hop
By way of continuing his "pink tea" policy Norman Elberfeld the Silent has named Outfielder Tim Bowden captain of the Lookouts. Tim will conduct all negotiations between the Chattanooga
Club and the Royal Order of Umpires. Elberfeld sought to sign up a deaf-mute for his club that he might carry the honors of the captaincy of the club, but no such person was available, so the
"Kid" chose Bowden, who has been known to go through entire seasons without so much as exchanging the time of day with an umpire.
Captain Tim's first mission on behalf of the Lookouts was to convey a request to the umpires that a trio of Chattanooga police, who occupied chairs on the field back of first base, be removed. The request was granted and the coppers, who the day before had escorted Elberfeld and a couple of his best fighting men from the park, were chased to the grandstand to look on from there.
