Elberfeld Punches Umpire Hurst and Gets Hit on Jaw with Mask
In these three critical innings there was some close playing and high feeling, in both of which "Napoleon" Elberfeld participated. After being called out at the home plate in the eleventh inning Elberfeld made known his thoughts to the Umpire Tim Hurst. Possibly it was only a gesture of the small third baseman, who desired to call attention of Umpire Hurst to some arguments of his around the home plate, but at any rate he did jab the high official in the side.
Hurst came back with a sharp uppercut to the jaw with his mask. Then several Boston players jumped in between the Two. Elberfeld was put out of the game., Austin taking his place at third base....
The tie wasn't in particular danger again until the last half of the eleventh, when the Elberfeld trouble came. He singled to left field, gained second on McConnell's muff of Donahue's throw. Engle went to first on a bunt. Chase singled to left and Ward raised the ball out into the same territory. Elberfeld did not wait until Niles (Left Field, Boston) caught the ball, but started to run before Niles squeezed it. He was caught at home plate. He thought he had got in; Umpire Hurst thought differently.
