1903 American League Preview
1903 AMERICAN LEAGUE PREVIEW
By Amos Spink
As the new base ball season nears, the American League has made its quest for legitimacy a top priority this season. With quality clubs in Boston, Philadelphia, and Cleveland, it may just do that.
"The only way to survive is beat them," asserted Boston's player-manager Jimmy Collins, "Respect is earned. Both from the fans and the National League."
Collins' Americans hope to be "earning that respect" against a tough National League foe in September's World Series, but his load will indeed be heavy.
Here is our preview of the 1903 season:
NEW YORK HIGHLANDERS -- The "Lowlanders" join the league with fiery Kid Elberfield and Wid Conroy. Aside their comical names, these two might hit the ball, but the real star has to be Jimmy Williams. Again, weak hitting and strong pitching will only get you so far. Former Bucks Jesse Tanehill and Jack Chesbro will win their games, but NY is merely a warmed over Pittsburgh club in need of some, o.k., ANY, offense. Fifth would be an excellent season for them.
