DETROIT, Mich., June 1.9.—The first game in the second series of the eastern and western teams of the American League in Detroit this season was played this afternoon between the New York and Detroit nines on very wet grounds in Bennett Park.
It has rained steadily for two weeks, The grounds were heavy and slow. Much interest was taken in the game because it marked the appearance for the first time of Elberfeld on an opposing team. For four years he had been a Detroit player and he has many admirers here. He got a warm reception. Herman Long made his debut in a Detroit uniform. The veteran short flelder is in good physical shape now and expects to play as well as he ever has, the baths having taken all the lameness out of his hands.
The New Yorks got here this morning, and the players have more spirit than when last in Detroit. Griffith says that his team will win enough games to be a contender in the race in another month, and he is confident that he will be able to finish at the top. His team is playing together now. and, with the hitters working and the pitchers in shape, He says nobody in this company can stop the metropolitan players.
