April 25, 1917 - The Chattanooga News (Chattanooga, Tennessee) - Treatment by Umpires
Manager Elberfeld, Secretary Foster and the Lookouts individually denied categorically this morning that their conduct at Birmingham. Little Rock or Memphis had been such as to give the umpires the least cause for complaint The Lookouts held a meeting in Birmingham and agreed to make only the mildest sort of protests even when the arbiters were guilty of the most palpable errors in judgment. This policy availed them nothing, however, Chestnutt and Morgan persecuted them incessantly. Upon one instance O'Toole refused to talk to Knowlson, ordering Elberfeld to come out and present Chattanooga's side of an argument. When the Kid approached he was ordered out of the park before he could open his mouth.
