January 20, 1944 - Lexington Herald-Leader (Lexington, Kentucky) - Memories of Elberfeld in Kentucky
THE SIDE SHOW
The Tobasco Kid
THE PASSING of Norman (Tobasco Kid) Elberfeld at Chattanooga recently prodded the memories of many longtime baseball fans, one of whom is W. E. Hagedorn of 1707
Versailles road. Mr. Hagedorn, just a boy when the Kid was playing at Lexington, vividly recalls the colorful third-sacker:
"He was my ideal. I thought he was the greatest ball player in the world, and no athlete has come along since that time to cause me to change my mind.
"He used to sneak me into the Lexington park, near the old race track, and I would shag fly balls until my tongue was hanging out. There was never another player with his fire and leadership."
Mr. Hagedorn recalls that Elberfeld played third base, Huck Conover was a pitcher, Campbell (Pet) Scott was on first. and a man named Renner played shortstop. Can anyone supply the remainder of the lineup?
