May 17, 1966 - Syracuse Herald-Journal - Elberfeld smartest baseball man
When Bing Miller, ex-Athletics outfielder, died last week it prompted Boston columnist Harold Kaese to recall, "Bing Miller said that the smartest baseball man he ever played for was Kid Elberfeld, that the one who knew the most about human nature was Connie Mack, and that the gentlest was George Sisler. One thin Sisler hated to do was take a pitcher out of a game. When Joe Bush once was being bombarded, Sisler walked out and said, "Joe, do you think I ought to take you out?" " 'If you don't,' Bush said, 'you better order coffins for your infielders, because if you keep me in, a couple of them are going to get killed.' "
