August 25, 1902 - The Evening World, NYC, NY - Elberfeld Signed by Giants
Signing of Elberfeld Shows That M'Graw has Started in Right Direction
Other Star Players Expected to Fall in Line and Delahanty Is Among the Number
The signing of Elberfeld of Detroit to play shortstop for the Giants next year is really the first step made toward adding strength to the New York forces. He is the first of the American League's good men picked up by Manager McGraw and, from the latter's recent remarks, more will shortly follow.
In the American League Elberfeld stands out this season as the bright particular star. He is said to be better that George Davis and that's saying a whole lot. The fact that Hanlon last season tried his mightiest to get the Detroiter is another testimonial of his ability. When Hanlon tries hard to get a man that man must be of stake calibre, as they say on the race track. Elberfeld had a good contract with the Detroit club when Hanlon wanted him and he oculdn't see his way clear to jump it. This year McGraw beat Hanblon out.
Elberfeld's contract with the Giants is for two years work at $4,500 annually. (Perhaps $1,500??)
Miller On Elberfeld
Roscoe Miller, the Giants' pitcher, hsas played with Elberfeld in Detroit and he ought to know just how good he is. Here's what he says of him:
"He is only a little fellow, but he has the greatest arm of any player in the business. He is as fast as lightning and can run bases as well as Billy Keeler. He has not got a very good team behind him now, and at that he is hitting within ten points of the 300 mark, and I know he is capable of even better work with the stick. If New York has him it has a corker.
